Dog Breeding Soundness Exams
These exams are critical for establishing your dog’s reproductive potential and if they’re healthy enough for breeding. It includes the analysis of genital organs, sperm or egg production and quality, mating ability, and libido. We recommend seeing the bitch 5-7 days after the start of her season to do blood work for ovulation timing and to discuss how she’ll be bred. For males, we’ll do semen collection and analysis to measure the sperm’s motility and quality.
Breed-Specific Health Testing
Breeds who are prone to certain inherited diseases could pass these problems to their offspring. To help you make an informed decision about your pet’s breeding potential, we perform blood tests as part of our pet reproductive services. These tests pinpoint the presence of the exact gene that causes the condition. This way, you can know whether or not your puppies will be predisposed to breed-specific health problems.
Natural Mating and Artificial Insemination
Dog breeding can happen in a number of ways. We offer both natural and artificial insemination options. Natural mating uses fresh semen deposited directly into the female by the male. Side-by-side artificial insemination also uses fresh semen, but instead of the male depositing sperm inside the female, the veterinarian collects the sperm and then inserts it into the female. The timing for natural mating and side-by-side AI is forgiving because fresh semen can live within the uterus for 5-6 days.
Contrastingly, chilled or frozen semen used in artificial insemination only last 24-48 and 12-24 hours respectively after being thawed. This means ovulation timing of the bitch is of prime importance. Also, unlike fresh semen, the veterinarian must insert the chilled or frozen semen directly into the uterus via surgical insemination. Surgery requires general anesthesia and the veterinarian will make small incisions in the abdomen and uterus in order to deposit semen directly into the uterus to maximize the chances of pregnancy.
